The bars you make with it are gentle on the skin, palm oil-free, and eco-friendly. I even share how to reuse a drink carton as a mold. The finished bars are a creamy white, and the lather is light and fluffy. Everything about this recipe ensures that the end product is good for you and the planet.

It includes only four soap-making oils, water, and sodium hydroxide. No fragrance, no additives, nothing extra. Simples.

Palm oil is one ingredient you’ll often encounter in cold-process soap recipes. It’s linked to deforestation, climate change, and obesity (as a major ingredient in junk food). I avoid it altogether in this recipe, though I’d argue that using sustainable palm oil is not a bad thing. It’s also a vegan recipe since there are no animal products included. Use organic oils if you’d like the recipe to be even kinder to the planet and your health. Buying and using them supports sustainable agriculture and healthier ecosystems.

The chemical reaction that results transforms the ingredients into a new natural compound that we know as soap. In a good soap recipe (always put new ones you find through a lye calculator), there is no lye left in the soap at the end. It transforms into the soap itself!

If you are familiar with soap making, you know that different oils have different properties that they bring a bar of soap. Some are nourishing, some are extra cleansing, some make the bar harder. A baby soap should get your little nice and clean, but most importantly, it should be moisturizing and gentle.

This recipe is very gentle on the skin. There is a pretty good amount of coconut oil (a very cleansing oil) to ensure the day’s grime is washed away, but that is balanced by a lot of olive oil, and some almond oil, which is both very gentle.

I like to keep added fragrances away from baby soaps, so this recipe will be fragrance oil and essential oil free. Using herb infused oils, however, is a great way to add light scent to your finished product without causing your soap to be too harsh for gentle skin. It will also incorporate the beneficial properties of the herb at hand into your soap. All will be explained in the following tutorial on how to use herb infused oils in your baby soap recipe!
